Jukkasjärvi, Sweden
Icehotel
Every winter, the Torne River supplies the building material. Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, about two hundred kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, has been rebuilt from river ice and snow each season since the early 1990s, then left to melt back into the water it came from.
Artists design the art suites anew for every edition, so no two winters look alike. Since 2016, Icehotel 365 has kept a permanent ice building open all year, cooled by solar power. Warm rooms and chalets sit beside it for anyone who prefers to sleep above freezing, and the dark months bring northern lights season.
